“And he said, ‘Then I beg you, father, that you send him to my father’s house- for I have five brothers-in order that he may warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.’”Luke 16:27-28 NASB
I cannot imagine how terrible a place this man is in that he would ignore his own fate and wish for his brothers that they be warned so they would not suffer the same fate.
It has to be a bad, bad place.
I have seen people not follow Jesus, because it would mean that a loved one would not be in Heaven. The point made by this passage is that loved one is not in Heaven, they do not want you to be where they are. Those who have died and gone to torment do not want us to follow them. They want us to follow God, become followers of Jesus and go to Heaven. The realization of this thought should move me.
If I look at the opposing thought, that those in Heaven want me with them and that God desires for me to be there with Him it gains even more strength. It becomes even more powerful in the direction of my life. It should move me to seek God and purposefully build a relationship and a life centered around Him and His Son Jesus. That is what everyone beyond this life is hoping for me. That is a powerful thought.
How should I be living my life and seeking God and His Son?
“And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him.”
Hebrews 11:6 NASB
“Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”
Hebrews 12:1-2 NASB
