“But when he came to his senses, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired men have more than enough bread, but I am dying here with hunger!”Luke 15:17 NASB
When I Came to My Senses
This young man demanded his father’s inheritance early. He left home and wasted the inheritance on what he thought was the good life. When his money ran out he ended up feeding the pigs. Then the Bible says he came to his senses.
The realization that his life was not headed in the right direction took time. This is just like me sometimes I have to be hit on the head with a brick to realize that the direction I am heading is not the way God intended for me to go. Generally, this is begins with me not going to His Word to find my answers, not praying and asking for His direction and not considering thoughtfully my actions.
The young man returned home and his father welcomed him with open arms. In fact he ran to him and put on a grand party in his honor. The lost son had come to his senses and returned home where he belonged, where he was loved and where he found peace and comfort.
It amazes me that God welcomes me back after I have taken a long, hard journey away from home. It takes time and circumstances to bring me to my senses, God knows that. He wants me back in the light of His love and presence. The only thing keeping me away from Him is me. I need to make the trip back home, repent and seek His forgiveness. He is always there looking for me, loving me and hoping that I will return. It just make sense for me to go where I am welcomed, loved and wanted.
Why should I go anywhere except back home to my Father?
“The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance.”
